Lending Library Program

Introduction

We're excited to introduce you to the Lending Library Program! This program provides you with the opportunity to temporarily access a Chromebook through a referral from your advisor at the Employment Hub. You've already taken the first step by collecting the Chromebook from Pendleton Library.

The Lending Library Program provides you with a Chromebook to support you in your goal to gain valuable skills by attending online courses or complete job applications.

This blog is a quick introduction to the Lending Library Program, providing you with copies of key documents, which can be found at the bottom of this page.

In this blog we also share some useful resources to help you get started with the Chromebook, ensuring you make the most out of this fantastic opportunity.

Useful tips for your Chromebook

At the bottom right of the Chromebook home screen, you can see the time, battery level and internet connection. If you select that option, a menu with a few options will appear:

  • Shut down your device
  • Lock device
  • Chromebook settings
  • Status of your internet connection
  • Turn on/off Bluetooth and settings
  • Accessibility options for the Chromebook (see below).
  • Turn on/off Do not Disturb (great when you are in meetings)
  • Screen capture
  • Turn on/off, Night mode
  • Status of your device’s volume
  • Status of your screen’s brightness

This Chromebook has some very useful Accessibility settings that can help you even more:

At the bottom right menu, selecting Accessibility Settings, will show you specific settings that are only available on the Chromebook.
Here you can enable things such as ‘select to speak’, high-contrast mode and large mouse cursor or highlight mouse cursor.

This will allow you to drag the cursor across the specific area you would like to take a screenshot for.

Please note that some settings may be restricted due to the terms of your loan agreement.

To know if a website is safe look for a lock symbol next to the website address and the letters https://

An easy way to remember this is the ‘s’ at the end of https stands for secure.

However, it is good practice to always be cautious when accessing any website, even if the lock symbol is there.

Here are a few common hazards to be aware of:

  • Did you access the website directly, or via a link in an email?
If in doubt, always go directly to a website where possible.
  • Is the website address correct and what you expect?
Most authentic websites will use one of the following “domains”:
    • .co.uk (if it is a UK based organisation)
    • .com
    • .org
    • .gov
    • .edu
  • Are you using a secure internet connection, such as your home Wi-Fi or mobile data?
If you’re using a Public Wi-Fi hotspot, be aware that other people may be able to access your information.

Google has provided some useful tutorials on how to make the best use out of the device. Please visit How to Chromebook.
